Dietary Law

What Scripture Says:

17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you

The dietary laws were given to Moses from God in Deuteronmy 14 and Leviticus 11 but as you can see from above unclean things should not be touched as the Lord said and Apostle Paul points out...

1 Ye are the children of the LORD your God: ye shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead.

2 For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.

3 Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing.

Whether you are an Israelite or a Gentile grafted in to Israel, these are the creatures of this earth that are clean and unclean:

4 These are the beasts which ye shall eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat,

5 The hart, and the roebuck, and the fallow deer, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the wild ox, and the chamois.

6 And every beast that parteth the hoof, and cleaveth the cleft into two claws, and cheweth the cud among the beasts, that ye shall eat.

7 Nevertheless these ye shall not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the cloven hoof; as the camel, and the hare, and the coney: for they chew the cud, but divide not the hoof; therefore they are unclean unto you.

8 And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.

9 These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat:

10 And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you.

11 Of all clean birds ye shall eat.

12 But these are they of which ye shall not eat: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,

13 And the glede, and the kite, and the vulture after his kind,

14 And every raven after his kind,

15 And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,

16 The little owl, and the great owl, and the swan,

17 And the pelican, and the gier eagle, and the cormorant,

18 And the stork, and the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

19 And every creeping thing that flieth is unclean unto you: they shall not be eaten.

20 But of all clean fowls ye may eat.

30 And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.

43 Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.

44 For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

45 For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

46 This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:

47 To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.

Breakdown:

To break it down into lay terms:

Clean:
  • Land Animals: Any animal that both chews the cud and has a completly split hoof: cattle, sheep, goat, deer and gazelle families.
  • ONLY INSECTS: locusts, crickets and grasshoppers
  • Ocean Dwellers: Fish with fins and scales.
  • Air: Chicken, turkey, and pheasants are not on the unclean list among others
Unclean:
  • Land Animals: camels, rabbits and pigs by name. Four-footed animals with paws: cats, dogs, bears, lions, tigers, etc.
  • Creeping things: moles, mice, lizards -- Insects are listed as unclean besides locusts, crickets and grasshoppers.
  • Ocean Dwellers: Fish without fins and scales: catfish, lobsters, oysters, shrimp, crabs, clams, mussels, squid, frogs, octopi, etc...
  • Air: carrion eaters and birds of prey are unclean, plus ostriches, storks, herons, owls and bats.
Things to watch for:

There are many food ingredients that ARE or CAN BE made utilizing by-products of these unclean animals, especially pork. Do your research, look for Kosher or Halal (not Halal meat, that has a blessing to another God said over it during its slaughter).

  • Gelatin (found in a lot of gummy candies, marshmallows, jelly deserts)
  • Shortening (Lard based)
  • Baked Goods - Donuts, Pastries, Pies, Croissants (can contain gelatin and/or lard)
  • Certain Cheeses - Mostly American (contains rennet, derived from the stomaches of swine)

About:

Our family reads the bible together, learning important lessons about what Salvation is, The Requirements of Christian Safety (T.R.O.C.S.), how to be humble and more.

"It is written Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God"

"If ye love me, keep my commandments."

"Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city."

Following His commandments (including Saturday Sabbath), following dietary law, full water baptism, covering/uncovering head for prayer depending on gender, following scripture as IT IS WRITTEN, that is what we do!
